Let the Light In

Let the Light In

Let the Light In reflects a personal period of clarity, presence, and quiet optimism for Johnny Depp.

"I've been lucky enough to understand through various artists - listening, learning things - the only thing you can really do is add the light to what’s there.”

Let the Light In

Johnny Depp

This collection draws us back into the light of Le Hameau, both literally and emotionally, as we see Depp capture the comfort and safety of home. Influenced by still life traditions and the discipline of capturing light in all its forms, a tenderness can be felt in the intuitive strokes and considered tones of these works.

We see Depp comfortably embrace a nuanced and painterly language in his artistic trajectory within this collection, as stillness and softness shine through the artworks.

“It represents exactly what I was experiencing at the time - very present, just, there.”

Having created the original works in the early 2000s, Let the Light In represents a poignant era of freedom and artistic introspection in Depp’s life. This period spanned the early years of his relationship with Vanessa Paradis and the growth of their children, Jack and Lily-Rose.

As a family, they spent much of their time together at Le Hameau, Depp’s estate in the South of France – where Depp painted these works.

“When Lily-Rose was a little kiddie, I’d paint her a rose every Valentines Day. On Mother’s Day I’d paint Vanessa some roses. You don’t really know where it’s going to go, it’s all up to chance.”

At the heart of this collection is a self-portrait originally created in watercolour, allowing a deeper sense of himself to surface. Created in watercolour, Depp gives us a unique insight whilst giving us an insight into the rawness and beauty of something in development.

Paired with the self-portrait is a rose, a symbol that Depp has felt an infinitely stronger tie to since the birth of his daughter. The flower embodies his love for Lily Rose and distils all his emotions towards her into a singular, poetic vision. Keeping it safe on the page.

Rendered with elegant restraint, the two pieces stand in quiet conversation – one looking inward, the otheroutward. Together, they trace the outlines of a private life touched by light.

This collection is about standing still, surrounded by those you love, and choosing to let the light in.
